Tips for Staying Active in the Summer

Summer is nearly everyone’s favourite time of year. Whether it be swimming at the lake or hiking on some mountain trails, summer is a great time to get outside and enjoy the sun with some friends and family. That being said, it can be hard to maintain motivation to stay active during the summer season.

You don’t always need incredible willpower to keep doing the activities you love during the summer. Here are some of the best ways to beat the summer heat:

Choose Your Time of Day Wisely

Summer heat and humidity takes its toll when you’re doing an intensive activity. Next time you go out for a hike, run, or bike, be sure to choose a time of day where the heat is less intense. Typically, the time of day that’s hottest and has the highest level of UV rays is between noon and 3:00 p.m. Try doing your activities before noon or after 5:00 p.m. to reduce the heat and sun’s impact.

Wear Light Colours

You may have always thought it was a myth, but the science stands behind it—darker colours absorb heat. This becomes especially prevalent after spending extended periods of time in the sun. Lighter clothing will reflect the sun’s rays, making you cooler during the duration of your activity. Natural fibres, such as cotton and linen, are more breathable and wick moisture from your body.

Apply Sunscreen

Be sure to not forget sunscreen when you head outdoors—even if it’s early in the morning. Ultraviolet rays aren’t characterized by warm weather and certainly aren’t blocked by the clouds. On an overcast day, only visible rays are blocked. An adequate sunscreen will provide protection from both UVA and UVB rays. Choose a minimum SPF of 30 and make sure to reapply every 90-120 minutes. If you’re expecting to go into the water or sweat a lot, opt for a water resistant variety that stays on and protects your skin.

Switch Up Your Workout

If you’re looking to stay active, but find your typical outdoor activities are just too hard in the summer heat, you should consider participating in water-based fitness classes. This way you get to spend some time outside in the fresh air, while staying cool. Alternatively, you can also sign up for a gym membership. Most gyms will have an air conditioning system so the outside temperature doesn’t impact the quality of your workout. If you don’t want to commit, there are also many free workout videos that you can do from the comfort of your own home.

Drink Water

Staying hydrated is one of the most important factors in beating the summer heat. High temperatures and increased humidity boost your chances of becoming dehydrated. This risk is multiplied if you are active, as physical exercise makes you lose body water. Combat this by always bringing a water bottle with you—even if it’s just for a few quick errands. If you’re going on a more extensive hike or bike, consider bringing a water bottle that contains a built-in filter. This way, you don’t have to bring as much water in your daypack, as you can use natural sources.
